Ruby Beach

Everyone loves a warm day at the beach, but as an artist, it’s a cool foggy morning that really inspires me. The lack of color in the sky and ocean leads to an incredible vibrance in everything else. Bringing to life the foreground in this scene was my favorite aspect in the creation process. It was wildflower season during this particular trip to the Washington coast and I wanted to represent that in this painting.

Last Light at Lost Lake

I’ve always been drawn to painting eastern facing mountains in the morning light, but this time around I took a different approach by capturing Mount Hood as it held the last light of the day and all the colors were fading from the sky. Light is one of my favorite things to focus on in a painting - I feel as though the entire mood of a scene is determined by the sky; the shifting light of the day is what truly gives shape to a landscape.

Snake River

The adventure that inspired this painting was not comprised of my typical long hike, or even a long drive. I set out for a day of plein air painting down the road from my house along the Snake River. It was a windy and cold winter day, but I found a spot along the rim of the canyon to set up and begin working. After a few hours, I found myself huddled up in the back of my car to hide from the wind. My painting adventure quickly turned into a relaxing afternoon reading, enjoying the views and waiting for the sun to set. As the only person willing to brave the frigid temps that evening, I was treated to a perfect winter sunset over the canyon in complete solitude.

Autumnal Skies

As the winter season slowly begins to make an appearance here in Idaho,I’ve been greeted by an entirely new color palette of inspiration. The soft, cool tones of winter cover the landscape and suddenly details that once were overlooked are now the pop of color that brings the painting to life.

After a day of adventuring in an unexpected winter wonderland, the clouds parted just enough to offer a breathtaking sunset on the drive home.

Cracker Lake

It’s the solitude found at first light each morning on a backpacking trip that I hold most dear from trips like that. A day hike can have all the beauty, but it’s the opportunity to wake up to such calm and spectacular views that bring such a peace and contentment to your soul.

During the day, this lake gave off a vibrant powder blue glow but for those of us who got to enjoy its’ beauty in the early morning hours, we were treated to this view. The water was so still and clear, the reflections were perfect. Glacier National Park has some of the most spectacular colored lakes, all being glacier fed, their vibrance and clarity is as close to magic as one could get.

Northwest Miniatures

When travels take me out of the studio, I have begun creating a small series of works on canvas panels, all 6”x8” or smaller. Inspired by scenes in the Northwest, I hope to capture its’ unique beauty with my tiny brushes and travel kit.

McDonald Creek

…Inspired by a belated birthday celebration that began with backpacking to an isolated powder blue lake in the backcountry of Glacier National Park and ended with a swim in what was possibly the most beautiful water I have ever seen. While merely scratching the surface of the beauty the state of Montana has to offer, this trip alone told me everything I needed to know. I head home from this trip with more inspiration than I could’ve ever imagined.

Coeur d’Alene

Northern Idaho has a quiet beauty to it. While like most places, the crowds continue to grow, it simultaneously still offers the space to be completely alone in nature. Untouched, unbothered… just Mother Nature doing what she does best. This spot, while a popular picnic area, on this day was all ours. Sitting amongst the wild flowers, listening to the grass swaying in the wind… the rest of the world faded and a perfect moment was created.

Elk City

Unexpected, the perfect word for this particular adventure. Torrential downpours kept us from the camping trip that was originally planned and took us off the grid to a town that could easily be missed on any map. With no reception, no hot water and the sound of dynamite off in the distance; it was quite the memorable setting. Elk City, the first mining town in Idaho, offers very little in terms of services, but instead provides a perfectly simple getaway in nature. We spent our days exploring the Clearwater River under stormy skies, spent the evenings with campfires and great conversations and for a perfect end to the weekend, we were treated to a break in the storm that brought this incredible sunset. It felt impossible to capture such perfection in a painting.

Hayden Sunsets

Within my Northwest Collection, I am working on creating a collection of sunsets all from one particular spot in Hayden, Idaho. I have always been fascinated by how the clouds and colors change throughout the seasons. I am looking forward to seeing how this project unfolds!

South Fork Clearwater River

Aimlessly wandering under stormy skies down Highway 14 as it tightly hugged the curves of the Clearwater River; my first adventure as an Idaho resident was nothing short of remarkable. With the spring snowmelt adding a sense of urgency to the rapids, the river had an almost electric energy about it. I was merely a spectator along the sidelines of a show that requires no audience; nature never ceases to amaze me.
